Ron January Ron January, a thirty-year radio veteran, is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Holy Family High School and upon graduating from high school, Ron enrolled in the School of Communications at Howard university in Washington, D.C.
His radio career began as an apprentice of the newly founded WHUR where he helped create the student oriented WHBC. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in radio broadcasting from Howard, Ron returned to Birmingham.
Ron's first radio position in Birmingham was as the moderator of a Saturday Morning talk show - "Sound Off". He later became an announcer during the afternoon drive period, and weekend Jazz. He further displayed his skills as the play-by-play announcer for Miles College Football, Lawson State Community College Basketball and for the State High School Basketball Championships. Ron was later promoted to Program/Music Director of WJLD.
In the early 80's Ron shifted his expertise to radio station WATV. After a brief period as mid-day announcer, Ron was promoted and held the position of Music Director for many years. He received recognition for his many endeavors at IMPACT Magazine's yearly convention and received the Secondary Market's Music Director of the Year Award.
Also while employed at WATV, Ron expanded his sportscaster skills to television. He served as play-by-play announcer for Black College Football on Fox Sports South Network and ComCast Communications Cable. In addition to his numerous other responsibilities at WATV, Ron was the substitute host on the Morning Talk Program.
Returning to his first job format in Birmingham, Ron is currently hosting the Morning Talk Program (Open Mic) and is Operations Manager of WATV. Ron was just recognized in 1st Quarter of 2007 by the Alabama Broadcasters Association as having the Best Large Market Talk Show in the state! Congratulations Ron on this milestone in your career.
